Philosophy

Our story

Why is every developer expected to be a platform engineer? We kept asking that while watching people get scolded for reaching for a .env file. The alternatives are handing your secrets to a hosted service, or running a secrets manager yourself. Running one yourself means setting up servers and a database, a reverse proxy with TLS certificates, an identity provider so your team can sign in, email, and encryption keys you can’t afford to lose, then keeping all of it backed up, monitored and up to date. That’s a platform engineer’s job. So people choose the most convenient option, the file. We built RatelKey so they wouldn’t have to choose.

We know RatelKey isn’t the purest self-hosting experience. Your secrets stay on your own infrastructure, but signing in and updates go through us. That’s the trade we made to make self-hosting easy, and it means RatelKey isn’t built for people who want to own the whole stack themselves.

What a Burrow is

A Burrow is a secrets manager you run yourself. Download it, run it, and it’s ready. Everything it needs is built in, so there’s nothing else to install or keep running. Store your secrets, share them with your team, and give your machines and automated workflows the access they need.
